Live Weather Radar: Follow Storms and Damaging Winds Approaching the Chicago Region

Severe Storms and Winds Head Toward Chicago Overnight

A powerful weather system bringing potentially intense thunderstorms and destructive winds is advancing on the Chicago region from the west. The most significant activity is expected during the late-night hours, keeping residents on alert.

Storm Impacts: High Winds, Hail, and Tornado Risks

As the storms move west to east across the Chicago area, scattered wind gusts could reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. There’s also a chance of isolated hail and even tornadoes, adding to the potential hazards overnight.

Timing of the Storm’s Arrival

The far western suburbs might start experiencing robust storms as early as 10 to 11 p.m., with the broader Chicago area feeling the brunt soon after. The heaviest downpours are forecast to soak the region between midnight and 2 a.m., bringing a soggy start to Saturday.

Lingering Winds into Saturday Morning

While the torrential rain should clear out before dawn, strong winds are set to linger through much of Saturday. A high wind warning will be in place Saturday morning, coinciding with the annual Chicago River dyeing event, scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. During this time, southwesterly gusts could hit speeds of 60 miles per hour, potentially complicating the festivities.

Afternoon Wind Advisory

Following the morning warning, a wind advisory will take effect from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Gusts during this period could still reach up to 50 miles per hour, keeping the windy conditions in play throughout the day.

Temperature Drop and Weekend Outlook

Once the winds subside, a sharp cooldown will sweep into the Chicago area. High temperatures are expected to plummet to the low 40s by Sunday morning. However, relief is on the way, with the mercury climbing back up as the new week begins.
